White Academic Merit Badges -Intermediate & Senior Phase

In order to encourage academic achievement amongst our pupils in Grades 4 to 7 a WHITE Academic Merit Badge is presented to pupils who obtain a certain sub-minimum in the aggregate (average mark) obtained.  This merit badge is presented at Academic Merit Assemblies which are held twice a year.  Parents are invited to attend these assemblies.  To achieve this badge, pupils must obtain the Merit % for their grade:

The MERIT percentages  for Grades 4 to 7 are as follows:
Grade 4 = 85% and over
Grade 5 = 83% and over
Grade 6 = 81% and over
Grade 7 = 79% and over

NOTE:
  • The badge will be withdrawn at the end of each six month period and re-presented IF the academic standard has been maintained.
  •  Grade 4 pupils only qualify for a white merit badge at the second Academic Merit Assembly of the year.

Blazer Merit Awards

These are presented to boys for consistent academic, cultural or sporting excellence.   Assemblies are held at different times of the year.  Parents are invited to attend these assemblies.

Red Incentive Merit Badge - Intermediate & Senior Phase

We are aware that not all pupils are academically inclined and are, therefore, not able to achieve a White Academic Merit Award.  We have thus introduced a Red Incentive Merit Badge in an effort to further motivate and encourage our less academically talented pupils.

A Red Incentive Merit Badge may, at the discretion of the class teacher, be presented to deserving pupils ¨ who show a MARKED IMPROVEMENT in their work or who maintain a high standard of academic work and ¨who are well mannered and diligent at school but who do not qualify for the “White” academic merit badge.

This badge is awarded for a six month period for Grades 4 to 7.

Red Incentive Merit Badge - Foundation Phase

In Grade 1,2 and 3, the Red Incentive Merit Badge will be presented and withdrawn weekly and not per six month period as in the Senior Phase Department. Each Friday at the Foundation Phase Assembly two boys from each class are awarded a red merit badge. This badge is presented on a weekly basis and returned each Friday.

Merits

Merits are awarded as a reward for a positive contribution to the school.  These are awarded at the discretion of the teacher.  Should a child receive 9 merits in a week, he is asked to stand in Assembly and is congratulated.  Should this happen twice in a term, or if a boy gets 40 in a term the boy is rewarded with a civvies day at the end of the term.

Demerits - Grade 1 to June Grade 4 demerit system

There are two types of demerits that are issued:

1. Homework / Work Demerits - These are issued to boys who have neglected to do work. A maximum of two demerits are issued at a time. When a boy accumulates 9 such demerits in a term, he will have to attend detention.

2. Behaviour Demerits - There are various categories of behaviour misdemeanours. (Minor up to 3, Intermediate 4 to 6 and Major 7 to 9) Should a boy accumulate 9 in a week or 30 in a term, he will have to attend detention.

Stamp System - Grade 4 after June to Grade 7

This system is aimed at improving the work and behaviour ethic in the classroom. Boys will have their homework books stamped if they fail to complete work or their behaviour is unacceptable. If a second stamp is issued within a six day cycle, this will result in an instant one hour detention for the boy on that afternoon, (3 stamps will have to be given to boys in Grade 4 from July and for boys in Grade 5 from January to June). Parents will be informed telephonically  if their child is in detention.

Please note. If the detention given is on the same day as an extramural activity, whether a sports practice, a match or a cultural performance, the boy will be expected to attend detention.

Detention

Detention is run two days of the week. (Wednesday and Thursday) Detention notices, together with the reason for the detention, are issued to the parents in advance. The reply slip on the detention notice needs to be returned to the detention teacher by the Tuesday, preceding the detention date.

For major transgressions of the school rules, a boy may be sent to Saturday detention.

Times of Detention:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 14:45 – 15:45
Saturday - 14:00 – 16:30

A disciplinary hearing may be called for serious misconduct, or if a boy is regularly in detention. Members of the Governing Body Disciplinary Committee may be in attendance at this hearing.
