The school offers individual music tuition in a large number of traditional orchestral instruments, including instruments such as the violin, trumpet, french horn, cello, flute, clarinet, euphonium and trombone, as well as the saxophone, drum-kit, piano, keyboard and guitar. The learners` progress is assessed throughout the term and twice a year they are examined by a panel of music teachers. Every learner playing a musical instrument also attends music theory classes as part of the curriculum.
There are numerous ensembles which the boys take part in, ranging from Junior String Ensemble; Senior String Ensemble; Wind Band; Brass Band; Recorder Ensemble; Percussion Group and School Orchestra. The learners have an annual orchestra camp which is interactive, lots of fun and very productive.
A large number of learners sing in the Junior and Senior Choir. The Senior Choir also has an annual choir camp, where the learners have a chance to bond, have fun making music, engage in activities and prepare for concerts. The Senior Choir learners take part in concerts with the Cape Philharmonia Choir. The learners are often invited to participate in opera performances and sing in the International Tygerberg Children's Choir. All learners are given the opportunity to perform in concerts for their grade during the course of the year. The highlight is the Annual Gala Concert where all the ensembles, orchestra and choirs perform. This is a concert not to be missed!
The music department actively participates in Eisteddfods, Competitions; External Music exams and Community outreach programs. The music staff takes it upon themselves to expose the learners to workshops and performing artists. During cultural week, concerts are organized for all learners and guest performers are invited to show-case their talent. The year is concluded with our traditional Christmas Carols where the High School and Little Bosch are included.
All in all, the music department has an action packed agenda of music at RBPS and what a great place to be! |
