Academics

Our academic 'ethos values' encourage our students in independent thought, interest and self disciplined study before routine class learning. This 'ethos' promotes real academic readiness for tertiary study and life in general. It also encourages a high degree of academic self-motivation - one of the many reasons why our pupils are regular winners and finalists in academic competitions. There is a long tradition of academic excellence at Rondebosch. This is based upon four pillars:

Academics

  • attracting pupils of ability who value academic success;
  • encouraging self-reliance and self-discipline;
  • attracting and encouraging a dedicated staff;
  • providing the best management and facilities we can.

All pupils write examinations in June
and December, and matriculants write
Mock-Matric in September.

All Maths pupils are streamed on performance, and a top set in English, Maths and Science allows pupils of the highest ability to extend their academic experience.

Grades 8 and 9 do all 8 learning areas, the only choice being Afrikaans or Xhosa as an additional language. Music pupils are accommodated in the Arts and Culture learning area.

Our pupils take part in numerous academic pursuits beyond the classroom: Olympiads, various competitions and Eisteddfods are all extensions of the classroom. Pupils regularly earn places in the top few in national competitions. RBHS has frequently come first in the prestigious UCT Maths competition.

RBHS offers a conventional academic education with a curriculum spanning a wide spectrum of subjects to suit individual talents and preferences. The academic standards expected are high and are reflected in the excellent achievements by the boys in the public examinations and national competitions.

Rondebosch consistently achieves at the highest level, and nearly all RBHS pupils undertake tertiary study. That over a third of our matric pupils achieved A aggregates in 2007 - and that over 90% achieved matric endorsement, is proof of this level of achievement.
