Board Portfolios

The Board is committed to work with the Headmaster, Mr Martin Barker and his team of dedicated education professionals to ensure that the high standards that have been achieved in the past will continuously be challenged to ensure that RBHS boys receive a balanced education in a great environment that will prepare them well for the future.

A number of portfolios have been identified to ensure good governance and appropriate focus on imperatives and initiatives.

Building and Estates
This sub committee has secured a long term tenure of our main sporting facilities above the canal from the City Council. It is involved jointly with Architects and Town Planners in planning the development of the campus.

Marketing and Fundraising
This subcommittee defines the broad based fundraising strategy in conjunction with the OBU and RBSET to support the funding of major initiatives as identified.

Sport subcommittee
Focuses on developing a long-term strategy in support of our vision to be rated among the top four schools in the province in the major sports we offer. This committee will define the action and resource plan and work with various interested parties to ensure an integrated approach in building a platform for ongoing sporting excellence at RBHS.

Strategic Plan – “Higher and Wider”
In the course of 2001 the School felt the need to re-assess functions and priorities and to map out a clear direction for the school in the immediate and short-to-medium term future.
Changes to society and education nationally and locally made this process necessary.  Through a series of facilitated discussions with individuals and groups and the broader Rondebosch community, current practices and priorities were examined, while new emphases and directions were explored.
Six sections for analysis were identified namely:

  • academic
  • sport
  • culture
  • staff
  • leadership
  • service

In each section, short and long-term scenarios were detailed and action plans put in place to strive towards continuing the tradition of excellence at the school

The implementation of “Higher and Wider” is the responsibility of the school’s Senior Management and Governing Body, with assistance from all other personnel, members and supporters- for the creation of, and belongs to, all Rondebosch people.

The review of these strategic imperatives takes place annually and progress towards achievement reported on at least quarterly.

Projects
In addition the Board will focus on the following aspects in 2008

  • The review of the rolling 3 year financial plan.
  • To finalise and present the budget for 2010.
  • Definition of a long term plan to develop the leased land above the canal.

Parent Involvement
We encourage parents at RBHS to get involved in all aspects of the school. Your responsibilities as a Rondebosch parent:

  • We ask that you take an interest in your son’s work, particularly homework.  Supervision should gradually decrease as you son becomes more mature and responsible, but he should always be encouraged to develop good study habits.
  • Please take an interest in his sport, watching him play his matches as often as possible.
  • Your son’s appearance, including neatness, cleanliness, haircut and wearing the correct items of uniform, is your responsibility.  If he has to wear incorrect uniform for some reason, please send a note with him to explain.
  • Membership of a school means more than merely taking part in what is immediately appealing.  Certain school functions are compulsory, and parents will be notified of these events no later than the beginning of each school year.
  •  In addition, most parents are able at some stage to help with catering, serving on the Ladies’ Committee, hosting visiting teams from other schools, doing floral arrangements, helping in the tuckshop etc.
