Cross Country 2010

It has been yet another successful year for cross country at Rondebosch. The league races took us all over the Peninsula: from the Tokai forest to Milnerton beach. The athletes not only had fun competing, but they also produced some very good results. Some of the courses were really challenging and pushed the boys to the limit.
Some of the athletes managed to come in the top ten of their races throughout the season: U14 – Roark Robinson; U16 – Craig Schoeman, Sebastian Daniels, Hayden Malan, Tyler Higgs and Evan Miles; U17 – Reece Gregg; and U19 – Sebastian Kellermann, Richard  Burman and Chad Philip. At the relay race that was hosted by Bishops, our U16 team won a gold medal.
The inter-house competition gave each house the opportunity to show off its best runners. In the U14 race Brandon-Lee Smith from Ramage came first. Keaton Saunders from Marchand came first in the U15 race. In the U 16 race Levi Calthorpe from Marchand came first and in the U17 race Reece Gregg from Ramage came first. The U19 race was won by Chad Philip from Canigou.
The overall results were as follows:

  1. Marchand
  2. Canigou
  3. Fletcher
  4. Andrews
  5. Ramage

Rugby

Rugby at RBHS is steeped in tradition, pride and passion. The impressive list of provincial and national rugby players bears testimony to the depth of association between Rondebosch and top class rugby.

History of rugby at Rondebosch

  • Rondebosch started off as a soccer playing school.
  • By 1904, rugby was being played on an unofficial basis.
  • In 1906 soccer was dropped and the bold step was taken to enter a rugby team in the u/16 competition where it had to compete, among others, with those schools with colleges attached to them, namely Diocesan College, SACS and Stellenbosch.
  • By 1913, the school won the under 15 and under 13 competitions.
  •  From this time onwards Rondebosch became a force in WP schools’ rugby, though it was 1922 before the School could win the under 17 Shield for the first time as well as the u/15 and u/13 competitions.
  • The golden years of Rondebosch rugby were undoubtedly the 1960s.  Three teams went through unbeaten in the years 1960, 1964 and 1967.

RBHS has had a number of players that have gone onto play international rugby:

Gerald Thompson, Jackie Tindall, Willie Rousseau, Jock van Niekerk, Alvi van der Merwe, John Apsey, James Starke, Mike Lawless, Ian McCallum, Roy McCallum, Chris Pope, Derek van den Berg, Joel Stransky, Dion O’Cuinneagain, Hanyani Shimange and Gcobani Bobo.

Rugby Programme

  • RBHS practices a professional and innovative approach to the school’s rugby with a comprehensive Performance Sports Testing programme.
  • This programme assesses players’ physical strength/weaknesses in relation to his playing position. It focuses on the abilities all players should possess and aim to develop, to improve his performance profile.
  • RBHS was the first school in South Africa that embarked on a study to maximize the safety of its players and adopt the programme. This includes using a sophisticated, research-based software tool designed to assist coaches and doctors to better manage a player’s return after sustaining a sports-related concussion. The system is called IMPACT (Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing)

Important matters to consider when playing rugby:

  • Mouthguards:  All players are encouraged to wear mouthguards.  While there are many orthodontists who will manufacture these, we have been given the website of www.maxmouthguards.co.za.
  • Head Protectors:  While not compulsory, all boys, regardless of position, are encouraged to make use of head protectors.
  • Traditional Boots:  The use of traditional black boots is strongly encouraged.  Many of the bright, luminous boots, which are exorbitantly priced, are inappropriate at school boy level.
  • Undergarments: Moisture management type undergarments may not protrude from the traditional Rondebosch jerseys and shorts.

Hockey 2010

1st XI Report
2010 has been an outstanding year for Rondebosch hockey, and the first XI was no exception. The season started off with a double tour in Johannesburg where the boys played 11 games in 8 days. The first 6 matches were played at Parktown where the boys managed to win 4 of the games - scoring 12 goals and only conceding one. From there, we went to the prestiges KES Hockey and Rugby festival. The boys continued to play some top hockey and managed to beat the hosts 1 – 0 in a game that will be long remembered by all involved because of the guts and determination shown by the entire squad. Another highlight of the tour was the defeat over Parktown when Daniel Blake netted a backstick just before half time.
When we returned to play our league fixtures, the form from the tour continued. Our resolute defense, consisting of Michael Sparkman, Dewald Keulder, Adrian Abrahams, Nathan Petro and led by our captain Robin Blampied made any opposition’s task of scoring goals extremely difficult and in the next 6 games only conceded 2 goals! Our forwards on the other hand were finding the net on a consistent basis with top goal scorer Micky Reid claiming tap-in after tap-in.  The first half of the season derbies produced draws against both Wynberg and Bishops.
During the break, Robin Blampied, Adrian Abrahams, Graham Schoeman, Chris Day and Cameron Prins all represented a provincial team. Congratulations to Robin and AB who were then selected for the South African U17 and U18 squads respectively.
The 2nd half of the season, although short, provided us with some great hockey and exceptional results. Our forwards continued to score some goals with the lethal backstick of Aiden Morris always providing a threat as he helped us thrash Dean Close (UK) 4-0 and Stellenberg   7 – 0. However, these results would not have been possible without the stalwarts of Tim Winter, Kyle Meeser and the dancing feet of Byron Applebee Anthony dominating the middle of the field; and of course our goalkeeper Sufyaan Goofy Bandekar who played a key role in our defense.
In the annual knock out tournament, Rondebosch drew Wynberg in the quarter finals where the boys produced the match of the season to win 4 – 2. The free flowing hockey was complimented by a determination never before seen by a Rondebosch first side and a cracking goal by Sparky sealed the victory. It was then Bishops in the semi final and even though the boys did not play their best hockey in this game, managed to grind out a win on penalty strokes with admittedly 5 of the best flicks I have ever seen.
The final two games brought us to the end of the season with a bit of undeserved  disappointment. Against Bishops, we scored one of the best goals of the season when Chris Day found himself unmarked in the D, but despite plentiful opportunities, we could not convert and after dominating the second half went down 2  - 1. The last game was against Central Hockey club in the final of the knock out. Again, the boys did not manage to capitalize on opportunities and allowed Central to remain in the game longer than they should have. Unfortunately, the game went to strokes, which we could not convert into a result.
The boys have been an absolute pleasure to work with throughout the year. All of them have displayed exceptional hockey ability and have had a top quality season.                                                             S Lovesay

U16A Report
There have been a number of unbeaten sides in recent Rondebosch history but this side was characterized by its incredible win ratio. A strong core of the previous year’s side remained and when trials began in early February it was a matter of getting combinations right. The 2010 year was fortunate to have five very talented U/15 players viz, Michael Cursons (most improved U/16A player), Zubayre Hamza who turned out to be a prolific goal scorer, Kay Schovgaard-Petersen who on his day could out- manoeuvre any defensive player, Shaun Henshilwood who showed great defensive maturity and Justin Prins, who excelled in every match he played. This mixed with the defensive experience of Kyle Herring at left half, Jason Giger who was superb in goals throughout the season, and the versatile Kieryn Thompson at the back, resulted in a great defensive combination. Dean Rutherford proved invaluable with his distribution skills and Ross Compton and Craig Schoeman complemented these skills with their great individual flair. Damien Hewitt proved a vital cog in the organization of the attacking defense and he supported the goal scoring abilities of Zubayre Hamza, Dean Rutherford and Kay Schovgard-Petersen with his good work-rate. Adrian Schwellnus as captain knitted the team together with his all-round skills. His positive attitude and encouragement contributed much to the success of the team.

The pre-season tournament saw the Bosch side starting to find combinations and after a couple of draws, saw the team come together with some great victories over Kearsney and St Stithians. Unbeaten on tour, Rondebosch began the   local season with great confidence. The results speak for themselves. Wynberg, SACS, Bishops and Paul Roos all beaten. The first half against a powerful Paul Roos must go down as one of the best U/16 displays in many years.

It is a testament to the ability of the side that despite many injuries the side kept winning. It did not always go their way – On the brink of defeat, a five minute blitz of two goals against Paarl Boys resulted in victory, despite not playing well. It is a mark of a great side that when the side is not playing well, it still manages to win.

The one loss came with a makeshift side playing an age group up, against a first team, Langley Park from the UK but this only served to strengthen the teams resolve. The second round against SACS, Rondebosch won a physical encounter 3-0, and then having dominated most of the game allowed Wynberg to draw, the first draw in a streak of fifteen games. Bishops was the ultimate test and great defence saw Rondebosch sneak in with a 2-1 win.

The season climaxed with the third showdown against Bishops in the knock-out final. Rondebosch were mentally the tougher side and a great display saw the Bosch side winning 2-0, to claim the title for the third time in five years. This ended a satisfying season, where the boys showed that when they were challenged, they rose to the occasion.                                          L Nel

U14A Report
The 14 A team had an exceptional season and finished as one of the top teams in the Western Cape. The season started quite early so that we could prepare for the tour to Northwood High School for their annual Ken Florens Hockey Festival. This tour always provides the team with the necessary exposure and game time to assess their strengths and weaknesses. The most important part of the tour is that the boys get to know each other away from the day-to-day school environment and bond as a team.

The main focus for the season was to score goals and they certainly achieved that. The slogan for the season was ‘The team, who scores the most goals, wins’. Unfortunately, we experienced this a few times when the opposition scored more than us, but this team managed to pick themselves up and raise the tempo for the next match.
They played some very good hockey throughout the season, most notably the way they ran into space and created goal scoring opportunities.

The season ended with the boys playing in the annual Knock-out Competition against Wynberg at Hartleyvale. The match was played at a good tempo but we were mostly playing catch up as Wynberg took control of the game. We did well to level the scores at the end of extra time, but we unfortunately succumbed to the dreaded penalty flicks and finished as runners up.

The following boys were regular members of the squad:

Nathan Rens had a very good season as goalkeeper. He managed to pull off some amazing saves and was always a strong voice in defence. He worked very hard this year and I was very impressed with his desire to play in the final with a badly injured left wrist. Chad Muller was solid at sweeper. He has the ability to read the game well and has quick hands, which enables him to make vital tackles. He has the ability to throw long overheads and his presence is certainly felt when taking a penalty corner. This was evident when playing against Durban High School. Their players actually ran away from their goal box when Chad was lining up a shot at goal. Cullen Wright had a good season at centre half. He has the ability to control the mid-field and read the game well. He worked hard on his game and was solid in defence. Cullen did a superb job as vice-captain. Shaun Sorour was the ‘silent assassin’ at right half. Although he is small in stature, he was able to attack down the right with ease and was very solid in defense. Andrew Oliviers’ hockey improved with every game. He has the ability to turn and out sprint his opponent with ease as well as make many goal saving tackles. Andrew had a very impressive season at left half. Matthew Swart led the team very well this season. His never say die performances in the mid-field and awesome work rate were a great example to his team mates. Who can forget his solo effort goal against Langley where he never gave up and with a full stretch dive managed to put the ball passed the keeper. Ross Reid ran very hard at right link. His skills and ability to read the game improved with every outing and he was very good at putting the forwards into space. Jordan Corfe had a very good season mostly as a link. He did play left wing a few times, but left link is where he made the most impact with his ability to beat a few players and release the ball to the forwards. Marc van der Merwe is a very versatile player and it showed when he had to move from his preferred position of left link to play centre half where did a superb job. Marc never gives up and worked very hard this season. Tayo Walbrugh is the team’s super striker. He finished the season off scoring in excess of 50 goals. Tayo is a natural athlete and has an awesome hunger to score goals. He worked very hard this season and it was a pleasure having him running up front. James Donald played some awesome hockey at right wing. He did the basics right by running along the baseline, drawing the keeper and either scoring or mostly creating scoring opportunities. He worked very hard this season and was very good at running into space. Daniel De Oliveira mostly played at left wing and managed to exploit the more difficult side of the field to attack from. He is also goal hungry and never gave up during the season. This was evident early on when he created an awesome goal against SACS, but unfortunately injured himself in the process. Greg Wagner was a late inclusion into the squad. He was rewarded for his determination to improve on his skill and speed. He mostly played as a link and was very strong in the mid-field. Azhar Dawood had a good season at left wing ad worked hard on his ability to play link as well. Azhar is a good runner with the ball and has the ability to run into space well. He showed some good determination to improve his hockey. Nicholas Eagles only played the first half of the season as he had to undergo a knee operation. Nicholas played a vital role as a link and showed some good skills. I certainly hope that his operation was a success and he will be able to play some good hockey next year. Jonathan Shepherd played a few games at left wing and impressed with his natural speed and goal hunger.

The following boys must be congratulated for making the u14 Disa Zonal team:
Nathan Rens, Tayo Walbrugh, Chad Muller, Ross Reid, Shaun Sorour, Andrew Olivier, James Donald & Cullen Wright.

A very big thank you to Miss Ghignone for all the hard work that she put in as team manager, and Saxon Hawkins who assisted me with coaching the boys. We definitely benefited from your expertise and would not have had such a successful season without your help.

Thank you to all the boys for an awesome season. This has been an interesting journey from which I have learnt a lot and I certainly hope that you guys have as well. A very big thank you to all the parents for their positive support! Grant Peacock

Squash 2010

SUPER LEAGUE.
This team has had a good example to follow and they have more than risen up to meet the challenge. Like every year, the season starts early for them in February with the St Andrews Festival where they won all their matches. Their coach worked them hard from day one. This team has always displayed a level of fitness that has been unrivalled. They play with strength and dedication and will always manage to outlast, outplay and literally drain their opposition of energy in their relentless attack on the court. The boys play a huge amount of squash from January to September and being fit is the only way to get through such a commitment. WP Top Schools this year was a breeze. Kyle at 1 had a daunting task this year. Being the youngest in the team and playing at one meant he has had to play older players with more experience. He started slow but gained momentum and has managed to be a good number one. Daniel at number two started his year with a big bang, almost winning the Cape Blue Tournament and only losing one match at St Andrews. He has had an exceptional five years at Rondebosch representing the school at numerous tournaments including three years at Top Schools. Over the years I have seen Luke mature in his game of squash to such a degree that he now plays an exceptional game of strategic squash. He has been the anchor in the team winning all of his matches this year. It is amazing to watch Luke ground his opposition into the ground and hardly break a sweat. I have seen surprise written on the faces of his opponents so often as he returns balls that should have been winning shots. There is no place on the court that Luke cannot reach. Only exceptional shots are unreturnable. When Daniel van Wezel was chosen as Captain I was a bit apprehensive, him being the quiet gentle giant that he is, but he has astounded me with his ability to lead and motivate his team. He never gives up and always gives of his best at training as well as in all his matches. Josh has proven to be a strong member of the team and is very hard on himself and feels he must win at all cost. As vice captain he has worked well with his captain to keep the team relaxed and in control. Owen, the newbie, has been an invaluable member of the team and has definitely proven his worth to the team especially at the SA Top Schools where he won all his matches at number five. Winning WP Top Schools three years running has been exceptional. Where in the past two years the team secured fifth place wins, this year they narrowly lost to Selborne College (3-2) in an epic final securing a second place win. The team has a motto “Winning is not an option, it is the only thing” and it is this motto that has kept them at the top. Of the six players in the team FIVE of them achieved Western Province colours in 2010. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with these boys. They are true ambassadors for their school and for the game of squash. They can be proud of their achievements which they have earned through sweat, hard work and a love for the sport. L Abrahams

UNDER 19A.
Half of this team was part of the first team squad that won all their matches at the St Andrews Festival and that also won the WP Top Schools tournament. They placed second at the SA Top Schools tournament that was held at Epworth in Pietermaritzberg. This team was incredibly strong winning all their matches. The only members to drop games were Josh and Owen in his last match against Westerford. Josh is a fighter and plays a very determined game of squash, winning at all costs and can always be counted on to take charge when the time calls for it. Owen kept his unbeaten record for the year until his final game against Dane where he narrowly lost 14-12 in the fifth. He is a great player who always remains calm and collected on and off court. Mathew played at no 3 and had no problems or competition with any of his matches. We could count the number of times he would actually run for a ball and they were few and far between. He never broke a sweat and yet won all his matches very comfortably. Cole would go on court with the sole purpose of having fun. He was very strong at no 4 and won all his matches. Because they were so easy he always tried new shots and in many games tried to win 11-0. Despite of this when the time came to be serious Cole could always be counted on as a sure victory. S. U15 A and B
The Squash season was a very demanding yet enjoyable one for all. The effort displayed by the players throughout the season was extremely admirable and the squash was, likewise, of a high standard. Focus during practices was on strategy and fitness levels and this seemed to have improved the game for all.

As far as the results are concerned, the U15 B team had an extremely successful season. They won all matches played and remain unbeaten. I am optimistic about our chances for next year, considering the fact that most of our players are in grade 8 and 9. Well done!

The greatest challenge this season was playing against Wynberg A, who had a much greater level of experience in their side. JP van der Merwe, T Redman, D Rippon and S Oostendorp however, played with so much drive and commitment, that all who watched commented on the high aptitude levels and competitiveness displayed by our players. Our team won the Wynberg B and C teams with ease.

Team members approached all games with enthusiasm and determination. L Kannemeyer

Table Tennis 2010
U19A The U19 table tennis league is contested between five schools only. In addition to Rondebosch, Pinelands, Westerford, Camps Bay and Deutsche Schule participated in 2010. As was the case last year, each school played every other school twice for the season. This year, factors such as the industrial strike action resulted in some games not being played. Nevertheless, most of the games were competitive and of good quality. A noticeable characteristic of the RBHS U 19 team, was the friendly rivalry amongst our own players for positions in the team. The RBHS team members would challenge each other for the top positions in the team. The match that stands out, was against the Westerford A team. After convincingly beating the Westerford B team, the RBHS team could only manage a draw against their A team. Although all our team members have very good skill, Yasin Gallant has impressed many with his exceptional smashing skills and determination to win. Both the captain, Naasir Bawa, and Yasin Gallant won every single game that they had played in the 2010 season. Well done on an excellent performance!

The A-team lost matches to Herzlia and to Wynberg Boys’ A team. The B-team, on the other hand, won all their matches.

Special mention must be made of Ihsaan Bassier, who had the highest number of wins this year, winning 7 of the 9 matches played.  He has maintained his excellent performance for the past two years.

The success of the team can partly be attributed to the coaching received by Stanley Davis, a Western Province chess player, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

CHESS BLITZ TOURNAMENT

The annual Blitz tournament was held on Friday 16 July in the Centenary Pavillion with nine schools and 18 teams participating.

Colin Ross, Captain of the A team describes the event.

Chess Blitz Doubles Tournament  2010

The Rondebosch Doubles Blitz Tournament Champions is a sought after title which has been held by Hertzlia for the last  6 years. This year eight schools participated and 18 teams were involved in the annual event. Rondebosch and Wynberg were out for Hertzlia’s blood as the second and third seeded teams respectively. Wynberg stumbled in the 3rd round against Oude Molen, but went on to beat Hertzlia, the first team to do so. This led to a 4 way play off between Wynberg A, Hertzlia A and Rondebosch A and B.

The winners were determined in an exciting playoff for the top positions.

The first playoff was a shortened 3 minute a side round. Rondebosch B was out classed by Hertzlia. However, Rondebosch A dominated Wynberg A and was unfortunate to lose on time as both boards were within 4 moves of a forced mate. In the final Wynberg A beat Hertzlia once again and were crowned champions, with Hertzlia coming second and Rondebosch A third.

Final Scores:
Ist position: Wynberg : 5 wins ; 1 loss
2nd position: Herzlia A:  4 wins; 1 loss
3rd position: Rondebosch A:  4 wins; lost 2
4th position: Rondebosch B: 3 wins: lost 3.

GOLF 2010.
With the loss of a number of top players from last year’s side, this was always going to be a tough season for the first team. In many respects it was a season of what could have been. The first team drew five of their twelve matches and with the odd putt going in, the league standing would have been greatly improved. Nic Colli was the standout golfer of the season, recording some impressive scalps playing at number one. The rest of the team all scored some good individual victories although consistency was generally a problem. The most satisfying result of the season was undoubtedly the return match against SACS, where we managed to turn around a loss in the first encounter and record a 4-2 win. The Sun City festival was a highlight for the four boys selected and although they found the competition (and the courses) tough, it was an experience that was greatly enriching for the players.
The B and C sides also had mixed results and were often frustrated by injuries and unavailability. There were a number of junior players who had good seasons, and in the light of this I am confident that golf at Rondebosch is healthy and that it won’t be long before we regain the heights of previous years.
A big thank you must go to Ms Kuyper - who joined golf this year - for her enthusiasm and lifting to all the matches.                                                                                                                                                        R. Dalrymple
