09 November 2010
This is the last Enews of 2010.
The Old Boys' Union wishes all our members and their families all the best for the festive season and 2011.
As part of the Old Boys’ Union’s Centenary celebrations the Union has been involved with the planning, implementation and funding of projects in the Memorial Hall foyer and on the Rondebosch grounds and we are pleased to let you know that these have come to fruition.
Remembrance Gallery
To commemorate the Rondebosch Old Boys and staff who died during the two World Wars and to celebrate the building of the War Memorial Hall sixty years ago, the Old Boys’ Union and RBHS History Department have produced large display panels about the history of the hall and biographies and photographs of those whom the Memorial Hall honours. The biographies were compiled by Mr Sydney Mason, Rondebosch headmaster from 1904 to 1927.
These specially printed panels are on permanent display in the Memorial Hall foyer and may be viewed this week before the annual Remembrance Day Service on Thursday 11 November. If you wish to attend the service on Thursday please RSVP to marketing@rondebosch.com
Labeling of the Rondebosch trees
The late Tickey de Jager was responsible for the planting of many of the trees which are a magnificent feature of the Rondebosch campus. Special labels have been produced identifying the trees and their countries of origin and these are being attached to several hundred trees on the Rondebosch grounds stretching from the main entrance and Canigou down to the canal. We thank Adam Harrower (E95) of Kirstenbosch and Mrs Jeanet Barker for identifying and labeling the trees, and the London Old Boys who raised funds towards this specific project in memory of Tickey de Jager.
The E2010 matrics received their Rondebosch Old Boys ties after their Valedictory Assembly. On behalf of all Old Boys we wish them all the best for their final exams.

Death of Ron Monk
The Old Boys’ Union was saddened to learn of the death last Thursday of Ron Monk (E1958) after a short illness. Ron served on the Old Boys' Union committee for many years, standing down in March this year. Ron is fondly remembered as a loyal and supportive Rondebosch Old Boy who was eager to assist Rondebosch whenever he could. He was a regular visitor to the chalet for Rondebosch rugby matches and always assisted at Old Boys and rugby gatherings. He was also a committee member of the Alma Cricket Club for many years. The Old Boys' Union extends its condolences to Ron's family, in particular his sons Brent, Dale and Dean.

Bosch Blend wine now available
The new Bosch Blend 2009 red wine sourced from premium vineyards mainly in the Perdeberg region of Paarl is now available. Proceeds are used to provide assistance with boarding fees for deserving boys who may not otherwise be able to go to Rondebosch.
The wine is a medium-bodied red wine with an expressive nose and a soft, lush mouth-feel. The Shiraz and Cinsaut combine to give ripe plum cherry fruit on the palate with a touch of pepper spice. Mourvedre adds complexity with savoury and dark fruit aromas. The viognier adds softness and intriguing floral notes. The cost is R300 per case of six delivered in Cape Town and surrounding areas.
To order, and to find out the cost of delivery to the rest of the country, please email Philip Myburgh at philip@joostenberg.co.za

Bequests to Rondebosch
From time to time Old Boys contact the Union with a view to making bequests to Rondebosch in their wills. As there are Old Boys who may like to remember Rondebosch in their wills, but at this stage want to remain anonymous by not wanting to ask for the relevant details, we can provide the information of the two Rondebosch entities which may be included in wills:
Rondebosch Boys' Schools Education Trust
IT 4622/98
c/o PO Box 731
Rondebosch
7700
Rondebosch Boys' Schools Old Boys' Union
PO Box 731
Rondebosch
7700
In both cases the bequests will not attract estate duty and funds will be used for the benefit of Rondebosch in accordance with the benefactor’s wishes. We thank all Old Boys who have included Rondebosch in their wills.
Will your email address change soon?
If your email address will change soon please advise the OBU office of your new address. We are thinking particularly of students who use university or college email addresses and who may graduate later this year, as well as Old Boys who may change jobs or retire.
