The Old Boys' Union intends using some of the funds raised by the Centenary Appeal to donate more interactive white boards to Rondebosch. Set out below is some information on this modern approach to teaching. Old Boys who would like more information should contact the OBU office who will put Old Boys in contact with the appropriate School staff.
Information Technology has become part of our everyday lives and technology is used to encourage boys to learn more independently and to learn actively. This is particularly important as youngsters in the 21st century are being exposed to technology in every area of their lives and respond well to it.
With this in mind, a learning environment has been created where Information Technology and education meet and it is visible in almost every aspect of the school, from boys in Grade 1 through to the coaching of sport. The Rondebosch boasts some ‘state of the art’ equipment, and is equipped with numerous computers in a dedicated computer laboratory at the Prep and High Schools, as well as computers throughout the two schools.
The purpose of computer education is not only to teach computer skills as a separate subject, but to integrate these skills into other subject areas.
There are data projectors in many classes, as well as an Interactive Whiteboards (effectively very big touch screens) which allows for a more interactive learning environment. The board is connected to a computer and the two devices communicate interchangeably. The teacher can write on the board using a finger and the entire lesson be recorded on computer for revision, for sending to boys who may have missed a class and even emailed to parents who may want to see what the youngsters have been taught. The boards increase the interactive atmosphere in the classroom which in turn increases the learning experience.
The teachers project their notes and slide shows onto these boards and instead of becoming a one sided lecture, it becomes an interactive two sided experience. Students can edit and make notes on the screen or answer questions directly on the screen. This allows the boys to play a larger part in the discussion and absorb more from each lesson.
The School has also been expanding its information and technology in other areas of the school. The Design and Technology Laboratory has a small computer lab, where the boys are exposed to digital photography, robotics, graphic design, as well as Computer Assisted Design.
