Reunions

Each Rondebosch Eyear organises and manages its own class reunions.  The traditional major reunions are held after 25, 40 and 50 years, with 10, 20, 30 and 60 year reunions also being popular.  A recent innovation is for our younger members to also have a 5 year reunion.  Contact information for reunion organisers appear on Upcoming reunions

The OBU reunion co-ordinator, Arundal Thom, is available to guide organisers with

their reunions and to provide expertise gained from other reunions.  Organisers should provide the Union with details of events and these will be published on the Old Boys' Website.

Broadly the organisation of a reunion includes:

  • Forming a reunion committee comprising of various members of your Eyear.
  • Obtaining a copy of your Eyear’s contact details from the Union’s office.  Old Boys, in particular our younger members may also want to use internet facilities such as FaceBook to contact class mates, but should not use these in isolation as not all Old Boys from a particular year are members of such sites.
  • Contacting class mates and gathering information on those who are ‘address unknown’.  This should ideally be done at least 12 to 18 months before the reunion functions to ensure that those living abroad can make arrangements to travel to South Africa.
  • Organising events which may include a dinner, braai or social gathering, ensuring that the events are accessible and appealing to the majority of the Eyear.
  • If RBPS or RBHS facilities are to be used these must be booked in advance by the reunion organisers through the school.  The E1942 Centenary Pavilion is an excellent venue for reunion gatherings when the school is not using the pavilion. The school is advised by WP sports unions of school fixtures for the following year during the course of November and accordingly it is unfortunately not possible to book school facilities prior to late November of the preceding year. A nominal fee is payable for the use of school amenities.
  • Upon completion of your reunion, please submit your updated database of names and contact details, particularly email addresses, to Angela Andrew at the Old Boys’ Union office.

Many reunion groups include a donation to the Union or the schools when compiling their reunion budgets.

The OBU has complied a guide for reunion organsiers - contact the OBU office to obtain a copy.

Please note that it is not the Union's responsibility to organise reunions on behalf of any E-years.  Through the Reunions' committee member the OBU can offer assistance and advice, as well as information on popular venues and formats. It is the responsibility of members of the Eyear to themselves to start the process and organise their reunion.  If you are interested in organising a reunion, please contact Arundal as there might be others in your year who have also started organising your E-year’s reunion.

The date of the 2012 Old Boys' dinner in Cape Town is still to be confirmed - it is likely to be during August or September.

Privacy policy

It is the Union’s policy to guard members’ privacy.  Class lists and contact details are accordingly not provided to Old Boys and third parties, with the exception of those who are organising class reunions or sub-union gatherings and contact information may only be used for these purposes.  Contact information and addresses may not be used for commercial or other purposes.  Should you want to make contact with a particular fellow Old Boy, please contact the Union’s office.
