Design and Technology is by necessity, a dynamic and changing subject. Each year the curriculum grows to include new equipment and topics. Wherever possible, cross-curricular links are formed to entrench and enrich the learner's classroom experience.
The classroom has the facility to offer every boy, from grade 4 to grade7, tuition in the following areas:
- Electronics;
- pneumatics, mechanics and micro-electronics;
- Mechanical and structural challenge based projects;
- Textile technology- closely linked to art projects;
- Graphics and technical drawing;
- Digital photography and design;

A typical project starts with discussion of a problem or challenge. Here the boys may be taught a specific skill or concept. The boys then design a few possible solutions, investigate materials required and price and plan the weekly progress. This is done by putting together a portfolio. They then move to the workroom facility to make their artefact. Testing and modifying is the next phase, whereafter they work on its aesthetic qualities prior to its evaluation either by a peer group or teacher. The emphasis in the higher grades is on self-sufficiency, innovation, creativity and self-evaluation. These, coupled to the exposure to new skills, offer a wonderful opportunity for gaining life skills and career guidance especially in the technological learning area.
At present the boys are progressing well with the curriculum. The grade four and five classes are developing their understanding of structures and strength of materials with their articles that they are building. The grade sixes have started their new portfolios with regards to electrical circuits designing and building them. The grade sevens have started working with electronics which has just been introduced to them. |
