Learning Support Department

The remedial department is available for all boys who may require academic support. There are two teachers specialising in the Foundation and Intermediate phases.

The areas of need constantly change but generally encompass

  • Reading and comprehension skills
  • Language and vocabulary extension
  • Spelling and phonics
  • Bridging language intervention for second-language learners
  • Maths

A very successful early morning reading programme (twice a week from grade 4 – 7) has seen the level of reading improve over the last year and fostered a love of reading among boys who previously struggled in this area.

The Learning Support Department is also responsible for co-ordinating the ILST (educator support team), compulsory for all schools. The team involves both Learning Support staff, Academic Heads of Foundation and Intermediate Phases, as well as the associate occupational therapist, speech therapist and counsellor and the teacher presenting her case. This team offers the best advice on the way forward and makes a recommendation of a possible route to follow when difficulties are experienced.

RBPS is also fortunate to offer the boys the services of a multi-disciplinary team. This is made up of a clinical social worker who offers counselling, as well as group social skills classes. The OT and Speech and Language therapists work from the school and so this makes it easier for the boys to attend.

School Councellor
The School Councellor works at the school on a full time basis at the school.  Therapeutic services are on offer to the boys and their families at an individual and group level.  Sessions cover issues such as depression, friendship issues, bullying behaviour, anger, anxiety, children managing divorce, death, or separation issues, parenting issues and general emotional difficulties.
Groups are also run for the boys, focusing on life skills for Foundation Phase boys.

Parents are welcome to raise specific issues that they feel could be the focus of group work, either for the boys or for parents.  Parents can contact the Councellor at school.
Should you wish to see the Councellor outside of school hours this can be arranged privately.

Occupational Therapist

The School Occupational Therapist works with boys who have various difficulties on an individual basis including postural control problems, fine and gross motor skills difficulties and spatial/visual perceptual difficulties and sensory integration problems.

Boys from all grades in the school may be seen during school hours or after school as well as children from other schools in the area.  Our Occupational Therapist can be contacted through the school tel:  021 686 4635.

Speech and Language Therapist

Therapy focuses on many areas including articulation, reading, spelling, phonological awareness skills, stuttering, social skills, auditory processing, comprehension, expressive language skills, self-esteem and confidence in speech abilities. As a speech therapist based in a school environment, together with a learning suppor team, we ensure that the therapy process is succesful.
